Swimrun Explained: The Endurance Sport That's Changing the Game

Swimrun started as a one-off dare in Sweden and has since become a global endurance format. Similar to a triathlon with its various disciplines, swimrun takes biking out of the equation to create a course that toggles between land and water. Distances range from short, beginner-friendly sprints to 45-mile races, making this innovative event accessible for all.

What is swimrun?

Swimrun is a sport where two-person teams alternate between trail running and open-water swimming without changing equipment, running in their wetsuits and swimming in their trail shoes. The event keeps engagement high with its fast-paced, back-and-forth nature and lack of mid-race gear changes.

Swedish origins: ÖTILLÖ

Swimrun’s roots go back to 2002, when four Swedish friends bet on a race across the Stockholm Archipelago from Utö to Sandhamn. They could travel via any combination of running and swimming, and the challenge ultimately lasted 26 hours. It became an official race in 2006 under the name ÖTILLÖ, Swedish for “island to island.” Today, the annual ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship covers roughly 43.5 miles and traverses 24 islands each September.

How swimrun works

A swimrun course is split into several short stages, alternating between trail and water every few hundred yards to several miles. Teams of two are connected by a tether during swimrun, and all gear must be carried from start to finish, making tandem pacing and suitable gear selection vital parts of the sport.

Swimrun vs. triathlon vs. aquathlon

While swimrun is a relatively new sport, it bears similarities to other established multi-discipline endurance events. Here’s a breakdown of the more common types:

Essential gear for swimrun

Swimrun participants must bring all their gear from start to finish, so swimrun wetsuit and shoe selection makes a big difference in terms of comfort and performance.

  • Wetsuit: cut shorter at the arms and legs to accommodate running stride.
  • Swimrun shorts: worn over wetsuit to hold hand paddles or a swimrun pull buoy.
  • Pull buoy: flotation device wedged between the thighs on longer swims.
  • Tether: 6.5-16 feet of cord to connect teammates and double as a tow line.
  • Swimrun shoes: grip-focused trail-running platforms paired with a waterproof upper.

Swimrun races and events to try out

Swimrun races have extended beyond the the original ÖTILLÖ swimrun to furnish a growing US and European circuit:

  • Swimrun Cape Cod, Wellfleet/Truro, Massachusetts: three events, 6-18 miles running, 1.25-3 miles swimming.
  • Swimrun Côte d'Azur, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France: three events, 5-18.6 miles total.
  • Swimrun Rheinsberg, near Berlin, Germany: three events, 2.7-13.3 miles total.

Swimrun FAQs

How long is a swimrun?

There is no set distance, but courses range from about 3.1-7.5 miles for beginners to ultra distances of 40 miles or more.

Is swimrun only for elite athletes?

With various lengths and locations to choose from, swimrun can be for anyone. If you’re just starting out but have trained for a 5K before, you can find swimrun events within that distance and give it a try.

How should I train for a swimrun?

Practice swimming in open water with your swimrun shoes and pull buoy to get used to kicking with them. Regular trail running will also help you manage effort and practice breathing. When planning workout lengths, consider the total duration of the event to help determine whether something like a 20K training plan or half-marathon training schedule might be a useful framework.

Swimrun: a test of endurance and teamwork

Swimrun takes the benefits of running and combines them with the excitement of open-water swimming to create an innovative endurance event. What began as a wager between friends has since grown into a global sport. The team format, multiple back-and-forth stages, and coastal locations have helped make Swimrun an increasingly popular alternative to triathlons and aquathlons.
