PLANICA, SLOVENIA (6 Mar 2023) – The 2023 Nordic World Championships have come to a close and the two-week celebration of skiing was a successful one for Team Salomon. Athletes using Salomon skis, boots and bindings won a total of 11 medals over the two weeks in Slovenia, including 1 gold, 2 silver and 8 bronze. A total of 9 athletes from 7 different nations graced the podium wearing and holding Salomon equipment, showcasing the global reach of the team.

US skier Jessie Diggins is entering uncharted territory in her home country after achieving even more success on another one of the sport’s biggest stages. Already her country’s most decorated Nordic skier, Diggins became the first American skier to ever win an individual Gold Medal at the Nordic Skiing World Championships. In Planica, she dominated the 10km skate from start to finish, winning by 14 seconds to become the new World Champion. The Minnesota native chose to focus on fewer races leading up to the World Championships, a strategy that paid off enormously, as she also won a silver medal in the team sprint skate race with teammate Julia Kern.

“ That was so emotional, that was so amazing, Diggins said of her individual win. That was one of the best races of my whole life. I couldn't really feel my legs at the end but that's normal for me. I was just trying to push as hard as I could, I was so happy about the snow because it helped me really work the corners and it was the perfect course for me.”

The sprint classic was also successful for Salomon athletes. At just 23-year-old, French skier Jules Chappaz made his way to the final to claim a maiden international podium. His bronze medal is the first individual medal in French sprint history. Maja Dahlqvist from Sweden added a bronze medal in sprint to her impressive list of accomplishments. She was also the last skier in the women’s relay, leading team Sweden to the Bronze medal.

There is no doubt that Skiathlon is Sjur Røthe’s favorite race. The Norwegian won his third medal in the discipline 10 years after his first medal in the same event at the 2013 World Champs in Val Di Fiemme, Italy. The win also came four years after his World Championship title in Seefeld, Austria. In a tough race for the podium positions, Røthe battled hard to win the bronze. It was his 6th career World Championship medal.

After great results all season in the men’s team sprint races, expectations were high in Slovenia for Salomon athletes, and they did not disappoint. Francesco De Fabiani won silver with his Italian teammate Federico Pellegrino, while French sprint specialist Richard Jouve added a bronze to his medal cabinet alongside Renaud Jay.

The Austrian Nordic Combined team added 2 bronze medals for Salomon in the team events. Competing in her first ever World Championships, 19-year-old Annalena Slamik won bronze in the Mixed Team Event. In the Men’s Team Event, Martin Fritz led Austria to a bronze medal.
