Beth Pascall Wins Western States 100 Endurance Run
British doctor finishes 7th overall and records 2nd fastest women’s time ever.
Salomon athlete Beth Pascall captured her biggest career victory to date, winning the famed Western States 100 Endurance Run in California and Nevada over the weekend. Pascall finished in 17 hours, 10 minutes and 41 seconds, recording the second fastest women’s time in the history of the race, which began in 1974. A hospital paediatrician from England’s Peak District, Pascall finished in 7th place overall, winning by 23 minutes and 6 seconds over New Zealand’s Ruth Croft. Pascall, Croft and Ragna Debats, who finished 3rd, were among three women who cracked the top-10 overall.
After a comfortable start weather-wise in Olympic Valley, California, the day heated up from there, with temperatures reaching to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). Hot weather is the norm at Western States, which rolls through the Sierra Nevada mountains and finishes in Auburn, California.
After a 4th place finish in 2019 and the cancellation of the race in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pascall took time off from her job as a doctor and spent 10 weeks in the US this summer to prep for the race. She was more than ready for the heat, taking the lead at mile 15 and remaining in control the rest of the way.
“It feels amazing. This year has been challenging for everybody for obvious reasons and I put so much into the build-up of this race. I’m so emotional right now and I can’t quite believe it. It will take a while to set in.”
