Worth the cost
Number 1, I bought this from Salomon at 25% off. For someone using my own money, I would love to think little of dropping $700, and $1300 for the full kit, but that’s a staggering price tag. But I did pay for both at just under $1000 and so far the performance has actually been worth that price.
The design is excellent—very adjustable but also dials in for skiing superbly. For instance, the breathing holes in the front collar are vital, but the two linear buttons (single snaps at nose and throat) so you can decide to unzip the top for more venting but are able to hold the coat in shape is lovely!
This gear is more than the goretex. I think the most important overall feature is motion fit patterning. I can wear a less bulky and more snug outfit(again I bought top and bottom) that becomes more comfortable throughout the day. It shapes to you as you go.
The coat is also some bizarre blend of sturdy feeling and ultralight. Burly stitching, oversized and aggressive velcro, reinforcement on abrasion points and the non-reinforced fabric is sturdy rip stop.
They have also addressed the pocket problem in recent jackets with plenty external and internal.
And it moves moisture roughly 30% (my calculation not theirs, but I know it’s significant based on my overheating and soppiness) better than the next coat down in price.
If you’re an aggressive, burly and sweaty skier like I am, this is the coat you should buy.
The color block design is far more appealing in person than online. Somehow the model doesn’t do it justice, but the submitted photos are helpful.
The long tail and hip length is an adjustment—they highlight the tail but the front is long too. At first it feels odd. Then I realized that the length is also minutely customizable. The double zipper allows you to zip from bottom or top. Seams are placed to help if you want to roll up all of it, or like I do-just the front. I appreciate the extra layer of bum coverage for cold lift rides.
Cautions of note: if you’re borderline, size down. I’m a relatively big guy at 6’ 225lbs, and I am in the large. This is roomy and long, so I went with what feels snug in other coats. This actually helps the jacket pull into place around my movements. The bigger size (xl) ended up feeling like a tent, and the size down, while I can feel it, looking in the mirror I realize it just fits well, while still looking baggy, and likes to be closer to my body so it can adjust.
I love Salomon, I buy a lot of their gear.
Their zippers are the Achilles heal. I don’t think this will last two seasons, only because of the zipper. Too expensive for less than two full seasons. And if so, then I can’t rate it 5 stars, but hopefully, and out of love for the S brand, I am trusting in the higher rating. Ideally I would get three seasons at this price, and I would be willing to go up ever so slightly in the weight kryptonite zippers would bring. I think.
I have been averaging 50 days and 200k+ vertical a season in the Midwest.
We have the most variable and extreme weather I have skied in, and I grew up on Taos mountain. This coat is ideal for a place where yesterday I was skiing at 28 degrees and today, Feb 27, we hit 72.
