In both road and trail running, staying well hydrated is extremely important. So much so that you’ll find that water bottles and hydration reservoirs are a few of the wide variety of hydration systems that have been designed for different uses. To improve your performance while maximizing comfort when running, we recommend trying a hydration vest with soft flasks. This system enables you to drink without stopping and guarantees freedom of movement without compromise. There are lots of different models of flasks so here’s our recommendation on how to choose a hydration vest and flask according to your needs and objectives.

Size and compatibility

Most hydration packs are designed to be compatible with 500ml flasks so that by stashing a flask in each of the two front pockets you’ll be able to carry a liter of water. Keep in mind that the form of the flask can vary for the same amount of water; some are long and skinny while others are short and fat. So make sure the flasks you’re considering will easily fit your carrying system.

You can also find smaller flasks that carry around 250ml (which we recommend carrying on shorter runs) as well as 150ml flasks that are designed to hold energy gels and solutions and can usually be carried in a pocket of your vest or running belt.

Depending on the brand and model, you’ll also find different size caps which can provide solutions like weight savings or easier filling.

Features and accessories

Based on the type of running you do, certain flasks will be better suited than others. In addition, there are optional accessories that will optimize performance:

  • Flask with integrated filter: perfect for rehydrating in the backcountry
  • Ergonomic flask: designed to be quick and efficient
  • Insulated flask with freeze-proof valve: ideal for winter running
  • Flask with hydration straw: for effortless hydration!

Accessories are often sold separately so make sure the threads on the cap are compatible with your flask.
Example: Salomon water filter caps are only compatible with flasks with a 42mm diameter neck.
