Huge Improvement to the Standard Flasks
These work a lot better than the regular Salomon soft flasks for freezing temperatures. The regular ones were completely unusable past about -5C because they froze so quickly, and once there was ice in the nozzle there was no way to get it out.
The new insulated flasks take considerably longer to start getting ice buildup- on one run at -18C they were good for about 1.5 hours before they became significantly frozen. The ice purging from the nozzle worked for a bit, until the ice buildup- below the cap got too thick. They were filled with electrolyte, so they would have frozen faster with straight water. For mild temperatures just below 0 they lasted for hours with no issue.
Overall, for more mild temperatures these are great but for much colder (planning on running today with -30C) they're still going to freeze too fast to be useful. Using a bladder, underneath a jacket so that it stays warm, will be a better solution for extreme cold. I much prefer using the flasks however, so these are still a worthwhile purchase for me for runs between -1 and -18 or so. For others, spending $40 per flask might be excessive with their limited range.
